« Party Like It's €1.999 »

"Scientific research has long demonstrated the power of suggestion in perception as well as the strong effects of expectancies. For example, people expect more expensive wine to have more desirable characteristics than less expensive wine. When given wine that they are falsely told is expensive they virtually always report it as tasting better than the very same wine when they are told that it is inexpensive. French researcher Frédéric Brochet "submitted a mid-range Bordeaux in two different bottles, one labeled as a cheap table wine, the other bearing a grand cru etiquette" and obtained predictable results. Tasters described the supposed grand cru as "woody, complex, and round" and the supposed cheap wine as "short, light, and faulty."

Yes, we know it's cheap, but does that necessarily mean it's bad?

In Party Like It's €1,999 we attempt to find some of the best really really affordable wines in all of Germany (and maybe even the world).

With frequent trips to Kaufland, et al, we've managed to acquire a fair sample, and so in defiance of all known wine etiquette, we've decided to host a series of rather uncouth and uncultured wine tastings.

Imaginative assessments, ad hoc scoring systems, quaffing and general enjoyment are all highly encouraged.

The first of our tastings will be at The Centre for Endless Progress on Thursday March 3 (18-22:00). You are cordially invited.

If you can't make it, we'll make sure to publish the results here.  We'd like everyone to have a taste of the best of the worst.
